File Formats

RAW VS. JPEG

What are three advantages of a RAW file:
- Higher dynamic range
- Has an easy software to download
- Displays highlights and shadows
What is one disadvantage of a RAW file: It is not as sharp

What are three advantages of a JPEG file:
- Has a higher contrast range
- Sharper
- Is immediately able to print
What is one disadvantage of a JPEG file: Has a lower dynamic range

WHAT IS RAW AND WHY MIGHT YOU NEED IT?

1. Under the first heading "Capturing the Images," how much of the data does a RAW file retain after it is captured by the camera? It retains all of the data without compressing it, and are larger than JPEG's because they are retaining more data.

2. Under the second heading "Processing the Files," what are some of the things that a RAW file enables a photographer to edit after the image is taken? You control the balance, contrast, highlights, shadows, colors, and saturation.

3. Under the third heading "Practicalities," what are some of the factors that photographers must consider when deciding to shoot in RAW? Not every camera can shoot in RAW, RAW files are significantly larger than JPEG's, and you can only make RAW's JPEG's and not the other way around.

4. Under the fourth heading "Which one is for you?" why would an aspiring professional photographer need to know how to work with RAW files? Editing needs to be taken very seriously if choosing photography as a career path. It is important to know all of the different ways to best edit your photos.

IMAGE FILE FORMATS

1. Which file formats discussed have you used in the past? JPEG, PNG, and HDR

2. What is the difference between a Raster and a Vector file? Raster files are made of pixels where  Vector files are composed of paths.

The most common file formats we will use in class are .jpeg, .tiff, .psd, and either .dng (Canon) or .nef (Nikon)

Look up each and answer the following questions for each:

1. Is this format lossy or lossless?
- JPEG:lossy
- TIFF:lossless
- PSD:lossless
- DNG:lossy
- NEF:lossless

2. What are common uses for each? By this I mean where would I publish each of them for the highest quality.
- JPEG: most common format to compose and download photos
- TIFF: common for exchanging raster graphics
- PSD: used to layer images
- DNG: used as a RAW file format
- NEF: also a RAW file format

3. Can you create this type of file in your camera?
- JPEG: yes
- TIFF:no
- PSD:No
- DNG:yes
- NEF:yes
