Chosen Photographer: Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2, 1949. At the current age of 67, Annie has accomplished a variety of accomplishments as she professionally shoots portrait photos of many well known people. In the 1970’s she landed her first major job with Rolling Stone. By 1983 she worked for Vanity Fair and was on her way to success with her many iconic images. Annie is well known for her stunning provocative images of celebrities. Annie grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut. I chose this photographer as I loved her stunning images as she pushes the boundaries of photography with her unique style. I love how she takes celebs and puts them in ways never seen before. I love her very unique style that is unlike many other photographers.

Annie is considered “one of America’s best portrait photographers” due to her bold colors and poses that she uses in her photography. Annie’s photographs have been showcased all over the world and many books as well as exhibits. Her father was an air force lieutenant and her mother was a modern dance instructor. Annie was one of six siblings. Later, Annie enrolled at the San Francisco Institution of Arts where she found her love for photography. Although, she originally enrolled for art, more specifically painting. She lived in Israeli Kibbutz for a short period of time until returning to the U.S. for her job at Rolling Stone in 1970. At age 23, she ended up becoming the Chief photographer, only after working at Rolling Stone for two years! She stayed in the chief position for around ten years. She toured with Rolling Stone but sadly fell into a bad drug addiction. Throughout those years, Annie developed her very unique style of bold positions, colors. Leibovitz even shot a photo of the famed John Lennon just hours before his death on December 8th, 1980.

In 1983, Annie left Rolling Stone and began her work for Vanity Fair. Here Annie created very beautiful yet controversial images of famed celebrities. Most of her photos showcased nude photos of the celebrities using her unique photography style. In 1987, she earned her Clio Award for her work at the American Express and many other well known jobs. Her amazing 200 photos were shown at the National portrait Gallery at Washington D.C. gallery where she became the first woman to be so honored there. In 1996 she worked as the official Summer Olympics photographer. To this day she has created many pieces well known throughout the world.

I chose Annie Leibovitz due to her more dark and “out there” type of photos. I love that she takes portraits yet makes them bold and edgy as she pushes limits to create amazing photos. I love her style of photography due to I enjoy similar types of photography. I chose three of her more well known works, as I chose her Les Miserables photo in which a dirty young girl with stunning eyes are standing in the wind. I absolutely love this photo and its dark composition. I also chose the photo of Meryl Streep with her face painted very white with a hat on as she appears unclothed. I think this photo is so cool as the Prestige actress is seen in a new way that hasn’t ever been showcased before. Lastly, I chose the photo of Angelina Jolie as she is shown with tattoos and an off the shoulder top. I think this image is stunning in its black and white nature. The photo is almost edgy and dramatic yet simple.
