Lone Star Dispatch Issue #4

1) School Evaluations Strike Concern (pg. A1).
 In the article, it was revealed that Bowie and many other schools received low scores for being "College Ready" Many believe that this is due to a main focus on star testing, rather than becoming ready for college. This did not intact reflect the schools and is not permanent as the scores will change throughout each year.

  • Who? Bowie High school and many Other High Schools
  •  What? Got low ratings on College Readiness 
  • Where? Bowie High school
  • When?2017-2018 School years 
  • How? The school is said to focus to heavily on STAAR and not enough on college readiness
  • Why? The schools received low grades among with other schools across Texas causing concern
  • Who was quoted in the story? Paul Cruz
  • Which quote was the strongest, and where did it appear in the story? " The scores are not permanent not reflective of the school"- Cruz. This is found in the last column of the article
  • Did the lead sentence make you want to keep reading?Yes because it gave a clear idea of what the article was going to be about and was also a hook sentence to get the readers attention.
2) High Schoolers can fall in love (pg. A7).
In the article, it was found that there is a large question on weather or not High Schoolers can experience love. Many adults believe teenagers are too young to experience things such as true love. Sciences have proved that teens have the same hormones and chemicals as adults, therefore they are able to fall in love (for real).

  • Where? in High School
  • When? During their teen years
  • How? Teenagers have the correct hormones and chemicals to feel true love.
  • Why? There is much controversy but it has been scientifically proven that teens are able to feel love.
  • Who was quoted in the story?Austyn Keelty
  • Which quote was the strongest, and where did it appear in the story?" In High School, with the right person and shared maturity, I think high school love is real"- Keelty. This quote was in the third paragraph. 
  • Did the lead sentence make you want to keep reading? Yes the lead sentence caught my attention while still informing me of what the story had yet to talk about.
3) The Who's Tommy (pg. B5)
In the article, it talks about the Bowie play Tommy. The play was performed by the Bowie Starlight Theater Company. Tommy is about a young boy who witnessed traumatic events as a young child and became deaf, dumb, and blind. He later became a pinball wizard and came "back to life".

  • Who? The Starlight Theater Company
  • What? Performed the Who's Tommy 
  • Where? Bowie High School 
  • When? Jan.12th- 22nd of the 2016-2017 school year.
  • How? With lots of work and rehearsals, the theater company pulled off an amazing show.
  • Why? In order to "change it up", the theater directors decided to go a different path and attempt a rock musical.
  • Who was quoted in the story? Cornwell, Jackson Walker, and Blake Pousson.
  • Which quote was the strongest, and where did it appear in the story? " I love performing that song, I really just forget everything else"- Pousson. This quote is found in the second column.
  • Did the lead sentence make you want to keep reading?Yes the lead sentence had a great hook as it lured the reader into wanting to read the rest of the article.

Photo evaluation:

(A1) The photo is a chart showing the the student grade calculation. I think this is a good way to display the information. The reader is able to easily see the chart and comparisons to other schools.
- The rules of composition it has is leading lines.
- The main subject of the photo is the information graphed.
- The photo is not exposed due to it being a graph.
- No depth of field either.

(B2) The photo shows a girl on her horse. I like this photo because they captured the jump perfectly. Also, I like all of the leading lines in the photo.
- The rules of composition are leading lines, and mergers.
- The main subject is a girl riding a horse.
- The photo is correctly exposed.
- There is a depth of field

(B5) I like this photo because it is a collage of Tommy photos which looks almost poster- like. I love the way they did this as it is very creative and unusual. The photographer was able to capture most of the play within the collage.
- The rules of composition are mergers, and rule of thirds.
-  There is not one specific subject in the photo as it is a collage showcasing most of the cast.
- The photos are correctly exposed.
- There is a shallow depth of field.

(A8) This page has many photos of girls doing gymnastics. The photos are cool as they showcase many tricks. I like all of the photos because they are able to capture the life of a gymnast.
- The rules of composition are leading lines, mergers, and rule of thirds
- The main subjects are the gymnasts
- The photos are correctly exposed
- There is a field of depth

(B8) I like this photo as it shows a woman doing what she believes in. The photo showcases a woman holding a woman's rights poster. The photo clearly shows what the article is about and how it affects the people involved.
-The rules of composition are rule of thirds and leading lines.
- The main subject is the woman holding the poster.
- The photo is correctly exposed
- There is a shallow depth of field.

My favorite photo from the article is the Tommy collage because it showcases all photos needed to clearly understand what the article is about and it is unique. The photo shows rule of thirds and mergers.

My Least favorite photo was the comic for "High -schoolers can fall in love" because I feel that a real photo could have been easily used and would have more impact.

If I was a photographer for this paper I would like to do the gymnast section because I think it would be interesting to shoot photos of tricks.

I thought the paper had pretty good photography. All were well exposed and followed the rules of photography.
